How to Measure Your Dog's Neck for a Collar
Getting the Perfect Fit
A properly fitted collar is essential for your dog's comfort and safety. Follow these simple steps to get an accurate neck measurement before ordering.
What You'll Need
- A soft fabric measuring tape (preferred)
- OR a piece of string and a ruler
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Position your dog. Have your dog stand or sit calmly in a natural, relaxed position with their head up.
- Locate the base of the neck. Find the area where the collar will naturally rest — this is typically at the base of the neck, just above the shoulders.
- Wrap the measuring tape. Wrap the soft measuring tape snugly around the base of your dog's neck. Make sure it lies flat and is not twisted.
- Check the fit. The tape should be snug but not tight — you should be able to slip two fingers comfortably between the tape and your dog's neck.
- Record the measurement. Note the number where the tape meets. This is your dog's neck circumference.
Sizing Tips
- Puppies: Measure frequently as puppies grow quickly. Choose an adjustable collar to accommodate growth.
- Thick-coated breeds: Measure with the coat in its natural state. You may want to add an extra half inch for comfort.
- Between sizes? Always size up for comfort and safety.
